What is anorexia nervosa? A person who suffers from anorexia nervosa constantly and intensely dreads gaining weight. Even though an anorexic is extremely thin, he or she limits the food they eat drastically.
But it's not only about food. Starving oneself is a way to feel more in control of one's life. It helps to relieve pain, any tension, soothe anger and anxiety...
An anorexic:
Weighs too little for her or his height
refuses to keep a normal body weight
intensely fears gaining weight
thinks she or he is fat even when skinny
misses three (menstrual) periods in a row?for girls/women who have started having their periods
Who becomes anorexic?
Even though it is widely thought that anorexia mostly affects girls and women (90-95 percent), boys and men suffer from it, too.
A unique characteristic of anorexia is not only the desperate need to be very thin, but also the altered body perception that goes with it. Even though everybody perceives anorexic as skinny, they don't see themselves as thin. It doesn't matter that they shed pounds at a dangerous rate. A person with the condition when looking in the mirror sees a fat person.
It is different in the case of bulimia, however. The person with bulimia doesn't avoid eating. Quite the opposite - he or she eats big portions of food and then gets rid of it quickly by throwing up or taking laxatives. This kind of behaviour is widely known as "binge and purge". Bulimia, like anorexia, affects mainly women and girls, although more and more men are starting to suffer from it. It is not as easy to notice as anorexia, however. Someone with bulimia may appear average or even above average in weight.
